Appalachian Sayings - Had The Lick

Had the lick

Had the lick = tired, exhausted, wore out, completely done in.

Boy I've got all kinds of sayings going through my mind this morning. Ones about being tired (very late night), ones about being worried, and even ones about being late since this post is late according to Blind Pig standards.

But the one that keeps coming to mind is "Boys I've had the lick." Probably because I heard Pap say it a few times yesterday.

Pap took a fall sometime early yesterday evening. Scared the living daylights out of himself and us.

As of 3 a.m. this morning he was on a ambulance headed to a hospital in Asheville. The verdict so far: 2 hip fractures and all that pain awakened Pap's old nemesis - heart angina in triplicate.

We'd sure appreciate a prayer for Pap if you're a praying person. I'll keep you posted on his recovery. The local hospital didn't think surgery would happen for the hip-I'm hoping they are right and its not necessary.

I'll leave you with one more saying: "He's a tough ole bird." That's what my sister-n-law allowed about Pap last night.

After his fall he somehow miraculously crawled (duck walked is what Pap called it) to the car and made it as far as Miss Cindy's house before he had to pull over. There's some construction going on nearby so she didn't hear Pap and he said by the time he got there he couldn't even blow the horn. But what do you know, Providence sent along one of Pap's old friends. Pap got him to alert Miss Cindy and she got him home after that.

We had the house ready for you to stay over. We couldnt get ahold of anybody.

Payers for pap you and the family .

I am just reading this,Tipper, and I am so concerned for your father. He is a fine man. I hope this finds him doing much better and out of pain.
My thoughts are with you all as you sing and perform knowing your thoughts are with your daddy. Give him my best wishes, please. I look forward to hearing an update.

Goodness, I'm so sorry and pray he'll be alright. Praying that he won't have to have no surgery either. If there's anything we can do let us know Tipper. Hoping for better news soon.

Prayers for Pap from South Carolina.

Never heard that particular saying, but more importantly, am praying for Pap and for all who love him.

Being all alone at his age when he fell, what was he doing, and all alone!!! I believe it's only by God's blessings that he survived, made it as far as he did before he flat gave out, and then that help came along when he could get no further on his own. Praise and Thank God!!!

Asking all prayer warriors at our Spirit Prayer Warriors group and at Facebook to join with us in prayer too.

Let God's Will be done for Pap, In Christ Jesus name. AMEN!!!

God bless.

P.S. - I didn't know he's a Jarhead, me too - long long ago. USMC Sergeant, 1969-72. Please tell Pap I said Semper Fi and God bless.

I'm late seeing this! I'm so sorry to hear about Pap!!! But it does bring to mind another old saying- tough as an old pine knot- and I'm betting Pap is. Will keep all of you in my thoughts and sending prayers for a swift recovery.

You certainly have prayers from New Mexico for Pap and the entire family and the doctors and nurses and the LPNs and technicians and the folks who keep the hospital clean and any volunteers who help out. And I don't think it was a coincidence that the old friend happened along when he did -- you named it correctly.

Sorry about Pap's problems. My wife's grandfather fell off his house roof when he was 76, trying to trim off a tree branch that was interfering with his attempt to paint the outside of the second story of the house. He was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. The hospital set his leg, but sent him home after two days after he insisted his wife bring in a bottle of his special homemade linament (it had turpentine, among other things). His explanation was a simple "I was all stoved up, don't you know." He lived until age 96.

Best wishes for Pap's speedy recovery.

Tipper, I'm sorry your Pap got hurt. Hope he heals really fast.Have him in my prayers.

Love in Christ to your family.

Wow.. Tell Pap we're praying for him.. And all ya'll..

Prayers. For Pap! Power in prayers! I agree he is a tough " Ole Bird"!
I enjoy this daily mail!!! Keep I it up!!! Crys in Arkansas

I feel a special kinship for Pap and all his family. When he hurts, I hurt. When he hurts, I worry. When he hurts, I pray.

Last Saturday evening I slipped and fell in the shower. I landed hard on my right shoulder and hip. Dusty was gone and my wife was in bed at the other end of the house and couldn't hear me. I was wedged into the tub and couldn't move. On top of that I have claustrophobia. It took me a few minutes to gather my wits, but I finally was able wiggle and squirm my self loose. I still couldn't get my footing and had to crawl across the side of the bath tub into the floor. Providence, as you call him, was with me that night and I was able to get to my feet and other than a little soreness I am fine. Needless to say I made a trip to wally world that same night and got 36 of those sticky grippy things for the bathtub.

Is Pap doing better today?

Pap, it ain't everybody our age that bounces when they hit the ground; I'm glad that you were one of them. Praying for you and hoping that all you get from it is another means of predicting the weather.

One of my favorite sayings is "Old bones is easy broke and a long time in the mendin'" I say it to myself every time I meet a flight of steps, pick my way through the garden patch, get in or out of the tub, things like that.

I hope you get over this real soon.

Keeping your Pap in my prayers for quick healing and recovery. Tipper, this post made me think of another way to use lick. I've heard people say, He don't have a lick a sense.

Praying for Pap, that God will wrap His arms around Pap and ease the pain and heal him completely.

Sorry to hear about Jerry's fall . When we get older it is easy to fall and hard to heal. I fell in Jan. at the age of 73 and broke my leg and crushed my ankle. Went to the Dr last Thursday and he said he guessed it was as well as it is going to be , but it still swells and hurts every day. Hope Pap recovers without surgery.

Hang in there, Jarhead....!

Holding Pap and your whole family in my heart and in my prayers.

Prayers sent! Hang in there Marine!

About 7 years ago when you and Pap came to my shop, I looked into the eyes and saw you were a people of sincerity. Ever since that time, I've followed, whenever I could, and received a blessing at all of your family concerts. It's nice to
see a family that prays together.
My prayers continue to go up for

So sorry to hear about Pap! I will keep him in my prayers. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Pap, get out of that hospital and back out in the garden! Mom fell down the basement steps and broke her arm when she was 73 years old. The only problem she had was not being able to work outside until the cast came off. I'm betting Pap is already worried about being cooped up while he heals.
I will keep praying until I know he is back on his feet and giving orders out in the big garden.
We love you Pap!

Prayers for Pap. Wishing for a speedy recovery.

So sorry for Pap. Prayers that he is well soon. He has got some voice and we love to hear their singing.

Prayers you shall have from this home. I can't imagine how much pain he must be in. I think he will have to be a supervisor for a while and, hopefully, those bones will heal quickly. Do they strap the hips to keep them in place? Oh, your sayings - all new for me.

I will be praying for a quick recovery for your Pap. God Bless

Sending healing wishes to your Pap!

Prayers for your Pap and all of you.

Ringing the prayer bells for Pap & your family.

I was hoping by this morning that Pap would be feeling some better. I know he will be sore for several days.
Tell him we are praying for him to get much better...We are still hoping to hear that sweet harmony, pickin' and grinin' in person one day soon...

Praying for a quick and complete healing for Pap!

Tipper, I am so sorry to hear about Pap's fall. I am praying for him and for all your family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Hang in there pap, I know you will be out and about in no time.
