During my busy month of July-I also managed to fit in one of my favorite things-stopping at yard sales. I decided to share one of my yard sale finds with this month's winner. I scored a whole box of old time canning jars for nearly nothing at a yard sale.

Although canning has come a long way since the days of using them to preserve food-the old jars are still great to store things in. I use them for dried beans, qtips, buttons, craft supplies, yeast, tea, herbs, and the list goes on.

Since I know she has a hankering for one of my altered digital prints-I'm sending her one-of the bottle tree.

When I was in school-I never learned about the Over The Mountain Men or the role they played in the Revolutionary War. A few years ago-when I discovered the part those men of Appalachia played in the birth of our nation-I become obsessed with learning everything I could about them. More than a little prideful of me-but I loved thinking about those first settlers of Appalachia turning the tide of the Revolutionary War.

Last summer, Ethelene Dyer Jones (fantastic historian, writer, and friend), invited me to her Dyer-Souther Family Reunion. The food and fellowship was as good as any I've experienced-and the theme of the Reunion was perfect-they honored the Revolutionary War Patriots from their family line. In the coming days-Ethelene is going to share those Patriot's stories here on the Blind Pig. So be sure to drop back by in the coming days to read about those who went before us-those who helped in the birth of our great nation.

p.s. Chitter got me a good book for Mother's Day-Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson-it's historical fiction about the Revolutionary War-told from a slave, Isabel's point of view. It's set in New York City-so it doesn't mention the Over the Mountain Men-but it is a great read.

The winner for December is...

Catherine Seiberling Pond! What does she win? One of my Altered Digital Photos-the 5X7 photo above is matted and ready for framing-all Catherine will need is an 8X10 frame to put it in. I hope she likes it.

I took the photo while riding a ferry down Fontana Lake. We were headed to Hazel Creek for an amazing day full of hiking through history. We went to see the town of Proctor-or I should say what remains of the town. When the TVA built Fontana Dam-it effected quite a few small towns. Most of them were flooded and covered by the lake created when the dam was built. Proctor was effected too-but not by being covered-it was isolated. After the dam was built and the lake filled too capacity-Proctor was only accessible by boat. A post about Proctor is coming up soon-so if you're interested be on the look out for it.
